Painting furniture creates a real statement piece for your home. We have worked with this client to complete a range of projects for her beautiful home. She had asked Todd James Handcrafted Kitchens and Bedrooms to create a bespoke space for her study. We imagine you agree that they did an incredible job.

When we visited our client, we were able to discuss the process of work. It was agreed that we would make good all mitres and joins. We would then fully check over the furniture and fill any imperfections or damage. We were then able to apply a base coat to any filled and sanded areas. Topcoat is then applied to the face of the fitted furniture.

A hand painted finish is really sought after. Hand painting is generally thought to offer a superior finish. How are you best to create a perfect finish?

Firstly, it is important to put time and effort into your preparation. It is a very well-known point that your final finish is only as good as your preparatory work. If there are imperfections such as scratches, chips, drips, old brush marks or gaps, these will all show through on your final finish. A new paint layer will not mask or ‘reduce’ the appearance of any of these things. It is only preparation work that eliminates them.

We know what paint works best, lasts longer and looks better. This same logic can be applied to brushes. You will find different people have different preferences.

Thirdly, it is important not to overwork your paint. Going over and over your paint, once laid, too many times will leave marks and brush lines. You will do more harm than good if you overwork the paint. It is much easier to leave something slightly imperfect, sand it out in between coats and then start again.

This takes us seamlessly onto our fourth and final tip. We would say this may be one of the most important. A very light sand in between coats of paint will get rid of any texture or small imperfections.
